Real Madrid has reportedly made progress in negotiations with José Mourinho regarding the possibility of him becoming the club’s next head coach. However, the process could now face delays due to the presidential elections recently announced by Florentino Pérez.

According to reports, Mourinho does not want to make any public statements or official decisions until the end of the season with Benfica, whose final match is scheduled for this Saturday. The Portuguese coach already indicated during his latest press conference that he would not comment on his future until next week.

Journalist Sergio Valentín of ESRadio claims that the operation is currently on hold because of the electoral process at Real Madrid. According to the report, José Ángel Sánchez contacted Jorge Mendes to explain that Mourinho’s arrival could be delayed until the elections are resolved.

The timeline will reportedly depend on whether another candidate officially challenges Florentino Pérez. If no rival candidacy is presented, the process would only last around 15 days, corresponding to the registration period for candidates. However, if figures such as Enrique Riquelme decide to run, the full electoral process could extend between 30 and 40 days due to campaigning and voting procedures.

According to AS, if no opposition candidate emerges, Florentino Pérez’s re-election could become official on May 24, one day after Real Madrid’s final La Liga match of the season.

The same report adds that Mourinho’s appointment could then be announced shortly afterward. Despite the current delay linked to the elections, the Portuguese coach remains the leading candidate to take charge of Real Madrid next season.
