Real Madrid are continuing to intensify their pursuit of José Mourinho as the club searches for a replacement for Álvaro Arbeloa.

The Portuguese coach is reportedly the leading candidate among the options being considered by the Madrid board, with growing belief inside the club that he is the right figure to restore order and competitiveness within the squad.

So far, only initial contacts have taken place between Mourinho’s agent, Jorge Mendes, and Real Madrid. Discussions are not expected to accelerate until both Benfica and Real Madrid complete their seasons.

Benfica are still fighting for Champions League qualification, while Mourinho remains focused on his current project. Once the Portuguese season concludes on the weekend of May 16-17, the coach is expected to make a final decision regarding his future.

Although Mourinho is reportedly happy at Benfica and enjoying being closer to his family, the possibility of returning to Real Madrid could significantly change his plans.

According to the reports, Mourinho has already outlined two key conditions for a potential return. The first concerns having greater influence over squad planning, particularly regarding which positions require reinforcement. The second relates to maintaining stronger control over the club’s internal structure and dressing room hierarchy.

The Portuguese coach reportedly wants to avoid situations similar to those experienced this season, where disciplinary and dressing room issues have repeatedly emerged around the squad.

Real Madrid are also aware of a clause in Mourinho’s contract that would allow him to leave Benfica for €3 million during a ten-day window following the club’s final match of the season.
