Rumors about the NBA expanding into Europe continue to gain traction, with reports suggesting a project that could rival the EuroLeague. According to the Spanish outlet Relevo, the NBA has already made contact with clubs like Panathinaikos and is awaiting responses from other major teams, including Real Madrid and Fenerbahce, regarding their interest in this new initiative.
The NBA reportedly aims to launch this European league as soon as the 2026-27 season, with those clubs being key targets for the competition. FIBA’s secretary general, Andreas Zagklis, has confirmed that the NBA’s increased interest in Europe is genuine, with further details expected to be revealed soon, likely during the NBA Paris game, where the project will be discussed.
This talk of EuroLeague teams possibly joining an NBA-backed European league gained momentum when Panathinaikos coach Ergin Ataman jokingly claimed that his team, the reigning EuroLeague champions, is world-class on all levels, hinting that the NBA might come calling, and cautioning that the EuroLeague should be "careful."
