The feeling that referees are systematically harming Real Madrid is no longer just a perception—it’s supported by the numbers. According to AS, while Real Madrid’s opponents see one yellow card for every 16 fouls committed, Los Blancos are punished far more harshly: one card for every 5.75 fouls.
This season in La Liga, Real Madrid have suffered 64 fouls but drawn just four yellow cards and a single red. By contrast, Xabi Alonso’s side has committed 46 fouls and already received seven yellows and one red.
The disparity becomes even clearer when comparing home games. At the Santiago Bernabéu, across three matches, visiting teams have escaped without a single yellow card—aside from the red shown to Osasuna’s Bretones in stoppage time on matchday one. Barcelona, meanwhile, enjoy a very different treatment: their opponents average a card every 3.5 fouls. In just 42 fouls against them, Barça’s rivals have been handed 10 yellow cards and 2 reds—12.5 more than Madrid’s opponents.
The most glaring case came recently at Anoeta, where Jesús Gil Manzano wrongly sent off Dean Huijsen. Even after the CTA admitted the mistake, the red card stood, forcing the defender to miss the Espanyol match. The youngster vented on social media, posting a five-point list of errors and ending with irony: “The mistake is admitted, but I’m still suspended. A good image for Spanish football.”
Inside the Real Madrid locker room and in the boardroom, frustration is at breaking point. At Anoeta, Xabi Alonso even told Gil Manzano directly: “You’re making me think badly.” The players feel it, the coach has said it out loud, and the board has already escalated complaints to FIFA.
