José Martínez Pirri will become the new Honorary President of Real Madrid in the coming months. The Board of Directors, chaired by Florentino Pérez, "has approved today, 17 July 2023, the proposal to the General Assembly of Members to appoint José Martínez Pirri as Honorary President of Real Madrid", as announced by the club in a statement. The appointment must be approved by the Assembly when it meets next fall.
The 78-year-old man from Ceuta will succeed Amancio Amaro, who passed away on February 21. Pirri has been collaborating in the club's institutional activity for months. In September 2022 he traveled with the team to Glasgow for the Champions League debut against Celtic. And last April he presided over the raffle for the tickets for the Cup final in which he informally served as honorary president, since that function is usually reserved for that figure.
Pirri participated in 561 games between 1964 and 1980, winning 10 Leagues, one European Cup (he was a part of Madrid Yeyé), and four Spanish Cups. He scored 171 goals, which puts him in ninth place among the club's all-time goal scorers.
Pirri will be the fourth white legend to hold the Club's Honorary Presidency in the 21st century, after Di Stéfano (2000-2014), Gento (2014-2022) and Amancio (2022-2023).
