The Premier League is knocking on Gonzalo’s door. According to an exclusive report from the British outlet the Daily Mail, “The Real Madrid striker is becoming a target for Brighton and several other Premier League clubs if the Spanish giants decide to loan him out in January.” Although the 21-year-old’s main priority is to convince Xabi Alonso and succeed at Real Madrid, multiple English teams are preparing an approach for the young forward ahead of the winter transfer window, driven by his explosive and prolific goal-scoring performances at the recent Club World Cup.
His four goals and one assist across six matches last summer not only made Gonzalo García the top scorer of the revamped FIFA tournament, but also placed him firmly on the global football map. That breakout run earned him a spot in Xabi Alonso’s plans and a contract extension. In August, Gonzalo renewed with Real Madrid until 2030.
However, the start of the new season has brought a different scenario. In 2025-26, Gonzalo has accumulated only 105 minutes across nine matches. He started against Espanyol on Matchday 5 and recorded his first assist in European competition against Kairat Almaty. As a result, Premier League clubs view Gonzalo as a potential market opportunity and are closely monitoring his situation.
The Daily Mail adds that “Brighton have already explored whether he might be available in January. Real Madrid will evaluate the situation as the transfer window approaches. If they agree to a loan, several English clubs are prepared to step in. Leeds United and Sunderland expressed interest in the summer, and others also admire Gonzalo García.” Despite intense competition within Real Madrid’s attack, Xabi Alonso still trusts the academy graduate, and the number 16 has no intention of stepping aside.
Brighton, who spent around €80 million in the last summer transfer window, have built a reputation as one of the Premier League’s top promoters and developers of young talent. Their squad averages just over 26 years of age. Their goal would be to replicate the “Ansu Fati formula,” which brought the former Barcelona player to the club on loan during the 2023-24 season. The challenge, however, is that Gonzalo is considered a valuable piece in Xabi Alonso’s squad and a player Real Madrid is reluctant to lose.
