Real Madrid continue to explore the market in search of reinforcements for the upcoming season, and one name growing in importance within the Valdebebas offices is Álvaro Carreras. The 22-year-old Benfica left-back has become a key target for the club, which is aiming to strengthen a crucial position ahead of Xabi Alonso’s arrival as head coach on June 1, in time for the Club World Cup.

Carreras is known for his ability to cover the flank with pace and precision, combining attacking depth with solid defensive work—qualities that align perfectly with Alonso’s plans to implement a five-man defensive system. His speed, powerful deliveries, and overlapping runs have made him one of the standout players in the Portuguese league this season.

While Carreras’s release clause is €50 million, Real Madrid is working to negotiate that price down. Although Manchester United holds a preemptive buy-back clause worth €18 million—valid until December 31—Madrid’s sporting leadership is seeking a direct deal with Benfica, avoiding involvement from the English side. Carreras himself reportedly has no interest in returning to the Premier League, which may benefit Madrid’s negotiating stance.

Carreras was initially developed at Deportivo de La Coruña, before joining Real Madrid’s La Fábrica in 2017. He moved to Manchester United in 2020, where he stood out in the reserves and gained senior experience on loan at Preston North End in the Championship. Last summer, Benfica signed him, and he has quickly cemented himself as a first-choice full-back. His strong performances in Portugal have attracted interest from top clubs across Europe—with Real Madrid now leading the race to bring him back.
