Journalist Jorge Picón has shed light on Ferland Mendy’s delicate situation at Real Madrid. The French left-back recently returned to action against Atlético Madrid, coming on in the second half, but new muscle problems were detected the very next day following his involvement against the Rojiblancos.

According to Picón, the decision to renew Mendy’s contract was a direct request from Carlo Ancelotti and was fully backed by the club after winning the Champions League in 2024. It was seen as both a reward for the title and recognition for a player who played a key role in lifting the 15th Champions League, as well as the 14th a couple of years earlier. However, internal medical assessments later suggested that the renewal was a mistake. A relatively injury-free 2023/24 season masked the underlying reality, as Mendy is considered a player with extraordinary qualities but an extremely fragile physical condition. One medical expert even described it as almost miraculous that he is able to play professional football.

Picón adds that only a few months after the contract was signed, there was already regret within the club. Real Madrid then asked several trusted intermediaries to explore potential offers for Mendy, fully aware that his recurring muscle problems would limit interest. Over the past two seasons, the defender has missed close to 40 matches due to injury.

There is no doubt about Mendy’s footballing level. When fully fit, he has proven to be one of the best left-backs in the game. The problem, as Picón points out, is his inability to maintain continuity and string together even five consecutive matches. With a contract running until 2027, Real Madrid will continue to look for ways to move him on before it expires. Some offers have already arrived, but none have met the club’s financial expectations. For now, the thinking is clear: if selling him means taking a significant loss, keeping him in the squad is the lesser evil.
