Real Madrid and Barcelona’s relationship reaches a breaking point

Relations between Real Madrid and Barcelona are far from their best. Ever since Real Madrid filed a private prosecution in the Negreira case, cooperation between the two clubs—once united against Javier Tebas and in favor of the Super League—has started to weaken. Journalist Ramón Álvarez de Mon revealed on Rubén Martín’s channel that the relationship between the two giants of Spanish football “is going to get ugly” in the coming weeks.

The tension has escalated following Real Madrid’s request to investigate statements made by former Barcelona officials involved in the Negreira case, including Joan Gaspart and Toni Freixa. The club believes that their testimonies could shed light on the payments made to José María Enríquez Negreira, the former vice president of the Technical Committee of Referees.

Complicating matters further is Barça president Joan Laporta’s recent shift in alliances. Laporta has strengthened his relationship with UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin, moving away from his previous alignment with Florentino Pérez. This change suggests a gradual distancing from the Super League project. Despite past collaboration, Real Madrid sees the issue as fundamental—accusing Barcelona of having compromised the integrity of the competition for 17 years.
