Real Madrid has fallen short of its minimum objectives this season. After defeats in the Spanish Super Cup and Copa del Rey, and a painful EuroLeague playoff exit at the hands of Olympiakos—where refereeing decisions played a controversial role—only the ACB League remains as a possible title to salvage the campaign. And now, further complications are on the horizon, this time involving one of the club’s brightest young talents.
Hugo González, regarded as one of Real Madrid’s most promising prospects, has officially declared for the 2025 NBA Draft. This comes after previously opting out of the 2024 edition. Despite limited minutes under Chus Mateo this season, González has impressed when called upon, showcasing enough talent to gain traction among NBA scouts.
The latest mock drafts place him firmly in the top 20, with ESPN projecting him at 22nd overall. Earlier projections had him as high as 14th, indicating that his draft stock remains strong. For Real Madrid, this raises a real risk: if the team that selects him in the draft offers a contract immediately, he could leave as early as next season.
What’s most worrying for Los Blancos is that González is unlikely to slip to the second round, where retaining him would be more plausible. As a potential first-round pick, his departure feels increasingly inevitable.
