Real Madrid has officially announced the commencement of the election process following a meeting yesterday afternoon. During the meeting, in compliance with the club's Bylaws, President Florentino Pérez informed the Board of Directors of his decision to initiate the elections for the President and Board of Directors for the upcoming four-year term.
"The President, after consulting the Board of Directors in today's meeting and in accordance with article 38 section b of the Articles of Association of Real Madrid CF, has requested the Electoral Board to begin the election process for the President and Board of Directors," read the club's statement released at 8:00 PM.
The Electoral Board now has two days to finalize the call for elections, which is expected to be officially issued today, Wednesday. According to the club's Statutes, the deadline for submitting candidacies will run from January 9 to January 18, providing a ten-day window. Should no other candidates emerge, Florentino Pérez could be re-elected as president on Sunday, January 19, coinciding with the League match against Las Palmas.
Florentino Pérez's current term was set to conclude this spring. He and his team were elected on April 13, 2021, after no opposing candidates stepped forward in the last election.
This upcoming election would mark Florentino Pérez's seventh term as president. Since assuming the role in July 2000, he has led the club for a total of 22 years, overseeing a period of great success that has seen Real Madrid win 37 football titles and 28 basketball titles. Additionally, under his leadership, the club has undergone significant modernization, including the development of the Valdebebas sports city and the recent renovation of the Santiago Bernabéu stadium.
Once the candidacy submission period closes, if there is more than one candidate, the election date will be set within 15 days. However, if only one candidate comes forward, that candidate’s slate will be proclaimed as the new Board of Directors. In the past four elections (2009, 2013, 2017, and 2021), Florentino Pérez’s candidacy has run unopposed, with the electoral process concluding in just 13 days.
