Two factors have pushed Real Madrid to take the first steps toward finding a new goalkeeper. The club is already making plans for life after Thibaut Courtois, who turns 32 in May and has a contract with the club until 2026.

First, there is the unpredictability surrounding Andriy Lunin's (24) situation at the Bernabéu. The Ukrainian is currently in a competition with Kepa to be the first-choice goalkeeper at the Bernabéu. Lunin has been considering leaving Madrid for over a year, and if his request to be sold during the summer transfer window is granted, the club will be able to sign a new goalkeeper before next summer. Real Madrid currently have Fran González (18) from León, a top prospect (1.99 meters), who is playing well for Álvaroa's youth team.

The second reason behind the hunt for a goalkeeper is Kepa's contract situation. The 29-year-old Basque was brought in to replace Courtois, and although Madrid did not initially rule out trying to keep him after his loan expires on June 30th, he is struggling to unseat Lunin for the starting position. Los Blancos are not considering paying a transfer fee for him, and Chelsea, who paid €80 million for him at the time, are not going to sell the Spanish international cheaply. Kepa is also just two years and five months younger than Courtois.

The Whites are keeping an eye on players on both sides of the Atlantic. According to the latest reports, they are tracking twenty-year-old Randall Rodríguez of Peñarol, a promising Uruguay U-23 international goalkeeper.

While Real Madrid are operating within a certain timeframe, they would prefer to have the Courtois heir signed in advance. The club will not be following the Premier League's recent spending patterns (€80 million for Kepa, €62 million for Alisson, €52 million for Onana), and even less so in a position that is well-covered right now.
