Real Madrid is pushing forward with one of the most aggressive and ambitious transfer windows in recent years. With the arrivals of Xabi Alonso, Trent Alexander-Arnold, and Dean Huijsen already secured, the club’s board is now focused on their next key addition — a left-back — with the full endorsement of incoming manager Xabi Alonso.
The chosen target is Álvaro Carreras, the Spanish full-back currently at Benfica, and a deal is reportedly close to being finalized, according to Cadena SER’s Carrusel Deportivo. The club is confident Carreras will be available in time to join the squad for the FIFA Club World Cup, which kicks off on June 14.
Carreras has edged out other top contenders for the role, including Theo Hernández, Milos Kerkez, and Alejandro Grimaldo. His consistent performances in Portugal have made him one of the standout players in his position, attracting attention from across Europe.
Interestingly, Carreras is no stranger to Madrid — he spent three years at La Fábrica, Real Madrid’s youth academy, before moving to Manchester United, where he struggled to find first-team opportunities. His career then took him to Benfica, where he has flourished.
Real Madrid is expected to pay Carreras’ €50 million release clause, although negotiations are ongoing to potentially reduce the final fee.
