Real Madrid have confirmed that Usman Garuba suffered a complete rupture of his left Achilles tendon following medical tests carried out on Monday morning.
The Spanish forward will miss the remainder of the season and is expected to face a recovery period of around one year after undergoing surgery.
Garuba’s injury represents another major setback for Real Madrid, who have now lost all three of their centers within the last 24 days. Edy Tavares and Alex Len were already sidelined before Garuba went down during the opening minutes of the fourth quarter in the semifinal against Valencia Basket.
The latest injury crisis will force Real Madrid back into the market in search of another center. The club recently signed Turkish big man Omer Yurtseven, who now becomes the team’s only available natural center.
Real Madrid may also need to prioritize a homegrown player due to Liga Endesa registration rules. Following the injuries to Tavares and Garuba, only Alberto Abalde, Mario Hezonja, Sergio Llull, and Izan Almansa currently meet those requirements within the squad.
