Although Sergio Rodríguez's official appointment to Real Madrid’s basketball operations team has not yet been formally announced, the former player is already actively involved in key decision-making. Among his early responsibilities are conversations regarding the NBA’s European expansion and strategic planning for next season. One name gaining traction in those discussions is none other than Nikola Mirotic — a former Real Madrid talent who later played for arch-rivals FC Barcelona and is considered one of the Euroleague’s premier power forwards.
Surprisingly, Real Madrid are seriously considering bringing Mirotic back. According to 24segundosenblanco, the idea is being driven personally by Sergio Rodríguez ("Chacho") and has the backing of influential club advisor Antonio García Ferreras, as well as team captain Sergio Llull. Notably, Mirotic and Llull have recently reconciled after past tensions linked to the player's controversial return to Spain via Barcelona in 2019.
Crucially, Mirotic is open to the move. He’s reportedly willing to accept the immense pressure that would come with donning the white jersey again — including a significant pay cut to align with Real Madrid’s budget. While he is currently enjoying his time with Olimpia Milano under coach Ettore Messina, his family remains eager to return to Spain. Mirotic is under contract until 2026, but a release clause allows him to terminate his deal this summer and sign with a new club at no cost.
Everyone involved understands that this potential transfer would initially trigger a strong backlash among Madrid fans, who still feel betrayed by his decision to join Barcelona upon leaving the NBA.
Whether Mirotic will complete a sensational return to the club where he developed remains to be seen, but this storyline is shaping up to be one of the most dramatic of the upcoming Euroleague offseason.
