A few years ago, the number of officially recognized Real Madrid and Barcelona supporters clubs in the United States was roughly equal. However, recent success on the field, combined with the departure of Lionel Messi and institutional turmoil at the Catalan club, has seen the capital side move ahead, with 17 official US supporter groups to Barça's nine.
California has four official Real Madrid 'peñas in the Sunshine State alone: 'NorCal,' 'Sur de California,' 'Los Angeles,' and 'San Francisco Bay Area.' On the East Coast, New York has three: 'Brooklyn,' 'Empire State,' and 'NYC Vikingos.'
