Real Madrid has stepped away from the race to sign Ibrahima Konaté, the Liverpool center-back who had been closely linked to the club in recent months. The French defender, whose contract runs until June 2026, now sees a major opportunity slip away and will have to consider whether to continue at Anfield.
At 26, Konaté represented an ideal market opportunity for Real Madrid, offering the chance to strengthen the defense without paying a transfer fee. He would have been allowed to negotiate freely from January 1, given that his deal expires in June. However, with Real Madrid now out of the picture, as reported by The Athletic, the player must decide whether to sign an extension with the Merseyside club.
“Real Madrid evaluated Ibrahima Konaté and informed Liverpool that they are not interested in signing the French defender,” David Ornstein revealed in The Athletic. The news was quickly echoed by Fabrizio Romano.
Liverpool’s poor season, along with Konaté’s inconsistent performances, appear to have diminished Real Madrid’s interest. Despite the possibility of signing him for free, the club prefers to explore other options and continue scanning the market for better opportunities.
