Despite the 2024-25 season just getting underway, Real Madrid is already planning ahead, setting ambitious goals to strengthen their squad for the 2025-26 season. One key move already in motion is the acquisition of Alphonso Davies, who is expected to join the club next summer on a free transfer. Bayern Munich was unable to secure the Canadian's commitment to a new contract, making Davies a significant addition at no cost, similar to Mbappé's deal.

However, the club's top priority for the next transfer window is a much bigger target: Rodrigo Hernández of Manchester City. The Spanish midfielder has emerged as a key focus for Real Madrid, particularly in light of Toni Kroos' departure, which has left a noticeable void in the team’s midfield. At 28 years old, Rodrigo would join Real Madrid at 29—the same age Zinedine Zidane was when he signed with the club in 2001.

Rodrigo is currently under contract with City until 2027, but he has yet to accept their renewal offers. His agent, Pablo Barquero, who also represents Raúl González, has been in contact with City regarding an extension that would place Rodrigo among the club's highest earners, on par with players like Erling Haaland. However, the prospect of returning to his hometown to join Real Madrid’s evolving project is a strong temptation for Rodrigo.

The midfielder’s professional future seems to hinge on two options: either renew with Manchester City or make the move to Real Madrid. The Spanish giants are proceeding cautiously and plan to make their move at the end of the season, especially with Pep Guardiola's potential departure from City in 2025. Real Madrid, who recently spent €103 million on Jude Bellingham as a strategic investment, is likely to make a significant financial commitment for Rodrigo as well, with his current market value estimated at around €130 million by Transfermarkt.
