Real Madrid tops a curious statistic related to the use of VAR in Spanish football. Since the technology was introduced, the club has had more goals disallowed following video reviews than any other team, with 40 goals ruled out over the past six years.
Villarreal ranks second with 23 disallowed goals, followed by Atlético de Madrid with 22. Real Sociedad and Sevilla are next with 20 each, while Barcelona has had 19 goals disallowed. The gap between Real Madrid and the other major LaLiga clubs is therefore significant.
Real Madrid's total of 40 disallowed goals is almost twice Villarreal's figure. The statistic does not determine whether the individual refereeing decisions were correct or incorrect, but it does show how frequently the club's goals have been reviewed and subsequently ruled out since VAR was introduced.
The difference becomes even more notable when compared with the other clubs that regularly compete for major honors in Spanish football. Atlético de Madrid has had 22 goals disallowed and Barcelona 19, both well below Real Madrid's total.
VAR has become an established part of modern football, although its impact on matches continues to generate debate among fans, players and clubs. For Real Madrid, this ranking highlights the unusually high number of goals that have been ruled out following video review.
