José Emilio Santamaría, one of the most iconic figures in both Spanish and Uruguayan football, recently visited the Legends Museum, 'The Home of Football presented by LaLiga,' to reflect on his illustrious career as both a player and a coach. At 95 years old, the Spanish-Uruguayan legend continues to tell his story with remarkable clarity.
Santamaría joined Real Madrid in 1956 and etched his name into the club's rich history, playing alongside legendary teammates like Gento, Di Stéfano, and Puskás. His list of accomplishments is extraordinary: five La Liga titles, four European Cups, one Spanish Cup, and one Intercontinental Cup.
During his visit to the museum, Santamaría shared that his passion for Real Madrid still burns brightly: "I still get excited about every Real Madrid match. I attend the Bernabéu whenever I can," he remarked.
Born in Uruguay, Santamaría holds the rare distinction of representing two nations at the World Cup—Uruguay and Spain. He secured three consecutive European Cups and retired in 1966, having played 337 matches for Real Madrid. He later managed Spain's national team during the 1982 World Cup.
