The Appeals Committee of the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) has rejected Real Madrid’s appeal to postpone their La Liga debut against Osasuna, confirming the match will take place on Tuesday, August 19, as originally set by La Liga.
Madrid initially appealed the decision of the Sole Competition Judge, who upheld the August 19 date. With that appeal now dismissed, the club’s only remaining option is to take the matter to Spain’s civil courts.
The core of Real Madrid’s complaint centers on insufficient rest following their Club World Cup campaign, which ended with a loss to PSG on July 9. According to the players' collective agreement, the team was entitled to more rest: they received just 24 days of vacation and 15 days of preseason.
While La Liga offered a three-day postponement, Madrid argued this was inadequate and instead requested to play the match as late as October 29. However, the judge rejected the proposal, citing Article 56.a) of the RFEF Statutes, which prohibits scheduling changes that would disrupt the calendar, except in cases of force majeure, which must be clearly proven.
The Appeals Committee ruled that no such force majeure existed, asserting that Real Madrid knew the scheduling risks associated with playing in the Club World Cup. Furthermore, Madrid’s argument that player health was at risk was dismissed, as the Committee does not have jurisdiction over player welfare.
Although Real Madrid plans to pursue the matter through Administrative Courts, it appears increasingly clear that the match will not be moved—and the season will begin with controversy.
