Real Madrid has made a significant move by securing a spot on LaLiga's Delegate Committee, a key decision-making body where critical issues regarding Spanish football are debated and voted on before reaching the Assembly. Florentino Pérez successfully gained the support of Real Sociedad and Valladolid to ensure the club's return to this influential committee, overcoming the resistance posed by other clubs in previous elections. This marks a notable victory, as the Delegate Committee has typically been composed of clubs loyal to Javier Tebas, LaLiga’s president, with whom Real Madrid has often clashed over how to manage the football industry.
On Thursday, LaLiga announced the new makeup of its Executive Committee. Miguel Ángel Gil Marín, CEO of Atlético de Madrid, will remain as first vice-president, while Jon Ander Ulazia Garetxana, CEO of Eibar, takes over as second vice-president, replacing Levante's former president, Quico Catalán. Alongside Real Madrid, Sevilla, Betis, Alavés, Rayo, and Las Palmas will represent the First Division clubs, while Sporting de Gijón, Cádiz, Zaragoza, Burgos, Almería, and Tenerife were chosen from the Second Division, with Tenerife being the only carryover from the previous term.
The LaLiga Executive Committee is one of the most powerful bodies in Spanish football, meeting regularly to shape the direction of the competition. During these sessions, Javier Tebas and his team present their strategic plans. While Real Madrid’s inclusion might disrupt the usual dynamics, with tensions likely to carry over from the Assemblies, Tebas still has the backing of clubs that support his vision for the league.
Although Tebas will continue to push forward with his projects, Real Madrid’s presence complicates matters. The club, which has been vocal in its opposition to Tebas, particularly over issues like audiovisual rights and the ongoing Super League dispute, now has access to crucial insider information. This could further intensify the battle between Tebas and Pérez, especially on topics that have already led to legal confrontations between the two sides.
