This year’s conditions of the grass at the Santiago Bernabéu have significantly improved compared to last season, when the pitch had to be replaced up to five times due to dust from ongoing construction, which severely damaged the grass. Despite extensive efforts and substantial investments, the quality of the pitch remained problematic. This season, however, the grass has performed exceptionally well, with only minor degradation over time, prompting Real Madrid to implement a meticulous plan starting Sunday, June 16, to achieve perfection.
The Santiago Bernabéu hypogeum, designed to care for the grass with extreme precision, is one of the stadium’s highlights. It houses six trays, each weighing between 300 and 500 tons, depending on irrigation needs. José María Fernández, head of playing fields and gardening at Real Madrid, explained, "The growing conditions are totally artificial, in which we seek to simulate as much as possible what it would be like to be outside."
The innovative nature of this project meant that it involved numerous trials and errors. The goal is to raise the grass, condition the ground with sand and organic matter, and plant the grass on the same trays, ensuring optimal seed germination. Within the hypogeum, the environment will be carefully controlled, including humidity, irrigation, and temperature, to simulate natural light conditions and prevent diseases.
Starting June 16, Real Madrid's plan involves raising the grass, leveling the ground, and planting new grass with precise conditions to achieve a perfect pitch. This ambitious project aims to restore the Santiago Bernabéu’s grass to the high standards set by former groundskeeper Paul Burgess, making it the envy of football stadiums worldwide.
