Real Madrid has taken their protests to a new level after the controversial defeat against Espanyol, where Carlos Romero's non-expulsion became the focal point of frustration. In the 1-0 loss, Romero's hard tackle on Kylian Mbappé half an hour before the end of the match went unpunished by the referee, leaving the score tied at zero and eventually leading to Espanyol's winning goal. This decision has reignited tensions between Real Madrid and the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF), highlighting the ongoing conflict over refereeing decisions.
Real Madrid, visibly angered by the situation, has intensified their protests. Their website prominently features the incident under the headline "A Global Scandal," accompanied by a photo of Romero's tackle on Mbappé. Beyond this, the club has released videos showing the referee's errors in various matches, while persistently criticizing the officiating community and the Federation.
In an unprecedented move, the club sent an official letter of protest to the Federation, with a copy to the Higher Sports Council. The letter, addressed to RFEF president Rafael Louzán, is titled "Formal Protest Against the Refereeing System" and refers to "the scandalous performance of the VAR officiating in the match played on February 1, 2025, against RCD Espanyol." This formal protest marks a decisive moment in the ongoing battle over refereeing decisions in Spanish football.
