According to AS, one of Real Madrid’s top priorities this summer is to reinforce the left-back position, and Álvaro Carreras has emerged as the standout target. The Benfica defender, who once played in Real Madrid’s youth ranks, is now seen as the club’s main option after the pursuit of Alphonso Davies collapsed.
Carreras is highly regarded at Valdebebas, but negotiations are expected to be challenging. Benfica are known for being tough negotiators and have reportedly set a €60 million price tag on the Galician full-back—far more than what Real Madrid are willing to pay.
However, the club has a strategy. Real Madrid are looking to take advantage of Manchester United’s €18 million buy-back clause. Their plan involves encouraging United to activate the clause and then negotiating directly with the English side, thereby bypassing Benfica.
This arrangement would benefit all parties: Carreras would join Real Madrid, Manchester United would profit from the resale, and the Spanish club would avoid paying Benfica's steep asking price. Real Madrid believe an offer between €30 and €35 million to United could seal the deal and bring Carreras back to strengthen the left side of their defense.
