Real Madrid’s management had already identified the right-back position as an area that needed reinforcing even before Dani Carvajal's recent injury. While there is full confidence in the veteran duo of Carvajal and Lucas Vázquez, the need for a long-term solution has become more apparent, especially after Carvajal's setback. This injury has intensified the urgency to strengthen the position and offer support to Vázquez.
In recent weeks, the club's sporting directors had been considering various candidates for the right-back role, with one name standing out: Trent Alexander-Arnold. The Liverpool star, who brings versatility and attacking prowess, is under contract until June 30, 2025, making him a highly sought-after option for Real Madrid and others.
The club's strategy has been to wait until January, when Alexander-Arnold would enter the final six months of his contract, allowing Madrid to make an offer under more favorable terms. This same tactic is also being applied to Bayern Munich's Alphonso Davies. However, much hinges on whether these players renew their contracts with their current clubs.
Carvajal's injury accelerates this timeline. Over the next few months, the team will monitor the response of Lucas Vázquez and evaluate if an immediate signing is necessary. Defensive injuries, including those to Alaba and Joan Martínez, are piling up, adding further strain on the squad.
If Alexander-Arnold remains interested in moving to Real Madrid, he could arrive as a free agent next summer, which would make the deal financially attractive. However, an earlier move in January could require a transfer fee, raising the stakes. In addition to his role as a full-back, Alexander-Arnold's ability to play in central midfield makes him an even more enticing prospect for coach Carlo Ancelotti, who would welcome his versatility.
