Strengthening the defensive line has become a growing priority within Real Madrid’s sporting leadership, as the club looks to drive a generational transition and raise the overall level at the back.

Last summer, the arrival of Huijsen was confirmed. Although his performances have dipped recently, the club still maintains high expectations for the young defender. At the same time, Real Madrid continue to explore additional options to reinforce the center-back position, with several names being evaluated for the medium term.

One option that is now off the table is Liverpool’s Ibrahima Konaté. A decline in form has led Real Madrid to cool their interest. A similar situation applies to Marc Guéhi, who is performing well at Crystal Palace but has not fully convinced the club despite being seen as a potential market opportunity.

With those names fading, the list has narrowed considerably, leaving three standout candidates. Dayot Upamecano has emerged as the leading option due to his performances and the fact that his contract expires on June 30, a situation Real Madrid could exploit. Nico Schlotterbeck is also on the radar, with Borussia Dortmund unlikely to renew his contract, making a summer move at a reasonable price possible. Meanwhile, a return for Jacobo Ramón is being considered following his strong performances at Como.

This is without ruling out internal solutions, such as promoting Joan Martínez. In any case, all signs point to a very busy summer ahead for Real Madrid.
