Last Wednesday at Anfield, Real Madrid set an unfortunate record by becoming the first European champion to suffer three defeats in the Champions League season following their title win. Losses to Lille, AC Milan, and Liverpool have not only tarnished their campaign but also cost the club significant financial rewards that could have been vital for future investments.
This season, UEFA awards €2.1 million for a victory (down €0.7 million from last year) and €700,000 for a draw (€0.9 million last year). Had Real Madrid won those three games, they could have boosted their earnings by €6.3 million. This substantial sum could have been allocated towards transfers, renewals, or player bonuses.
Currently, Real Madrid has earned €4.2 million from victories against Stuttgart and Borussia Dortmund. A perfect record would have allowed them to pocket a total of €10.5 million from match results alone. Additionally, just for participating, UEFA allocates €18.6 million to each team, an increase of €3 million compared to the last edition.
However, hope remains with three group stage matches left to play against Atalanta, Salzburg, and Brest, offering an additional €6.3 million in potential earnings. Furthermore, depending on their group stage finish, teams can earn between €0.7 million (for finishing last) and €10 million (for finishing first). Reaching the round of 16 would also add a further €11 million to Real Madrid's revenue.
