The ‘Negreira case’ continues to develop, with the latest step being the expansion of the investigation following a request from Real Madrid. The club addressed the payments made by Barcelona to the former vice-president of the Technical Committee of Referees, which have been central to the ongoing inquiry.
In its submission, Real Madrid argued: “Given the general tone in the statements of referees and former referees, the system of control and evaluation of the performance of referees, in which Mr. Enríquez Negreira had a special role, was arbitrary and perverted, with the promotion and professional career of referees depending on the mere will of those responsible for the CTA,” according to a document made public by Xavier Estrada Fernández.
The statement further added: “Certainly, the incriminating elements that already existed when the Order of 14/3/2024 was issued (the million-dollar payments from FC Barcelona to the Vice President of the Technical Committee of Referees and their absolute lack of justification, among many others), plus other various additional elements that have been added as the police investigation progressed, more than justify the continuation of the present procedure through the Abbreviated Procedure, and undoubtedly allow us to state a continued behavior of sports corruption, of criminal origin and attributable to all those investigated .”
