Real Madrid plan to offer Thibaut Courtois a two-year contract extension. His current contract ends in June 2026, but the club wants to keep him until June 2028, when the Belgian goalkeeper will turn 36.
Eduardo Inda revealed this on his weekly appearance on El Chiringuito de Jugones: "Real Madrid will extend the contract of the best goalkeeper in the world at the end of the season. His current deal ends in 2026, and they want to extend it until 2028. He's number one."
Courtois is a key player for Real Madrid. Widely regarded as the best goalkeeper in the world, he recovered from a serious knee injury that kept him out for most of last season. Now, he is back to his best—performing miraculous saves and rescuing the team regularly.
However, Courtois' contract is set to expire in June 2026. This means, at the end of this season, he will enter the final year of his deal, allowing him to negotiate with other clubs by next January—unless he renews. Real Madrid’s goal is to avoid that by extending his contract until June 2028.
Although Real Madrid usually offer one-year renewals to players over 30, they are willing to make an exception for Courtois. There are a few reasons for this. First, goalkeepers often have longer careers than outfield players, and at 36, Courtois would still be at his peak.
Additionally, the club sees Courtois as more than just a goalkeeper. His experience, ability to read the game, and leadership make him a valuable figure on the field and in the dressing room. His calm authority makes him a natural leader, even without wearing the captain’s armband.
That’s why Real Madrid want to extend his contract. With Courtois, they feel confident about their goalkeeping position and believe he brings much-needed stability to a dressing room full of stars and egos. He has character and authority, but no diva-like behavior.
Courtois is happy at Real Madrid. As he famously said, in a comment that stung Atlético fans: "I’m on the right side of history now." While he could attract offers with higher financial rewards, Courtois values success and happiness above all, and he has found both at the Santiago Bernabéu. Hopefully, for many years to come.
