Kees Smit has emerged as one of the midfielders closely followed by Real Madrid as the club consider reinforcements in the coming months. The young Dutch talent appears increasingly likely to leave AZ Alkmaar in the near future, although his next destination remains unclear. Speaking openly about his situation in an interview with De Telegraaf, Smit did not avoid questions about what lies ahead.
“How long do I see myself at AZ? I think six months or a year and a half,” he said. “After that, I hope to have taken the next step. I expect my transfer to be completed for 30 million. It would be the most expensive signing in AZ’s history and it would be good for the club. My next step is outside the Netherlands. No, I don’t find it difficult to accept. In fact, I think it’s wonderful and I’ve already started thinking about it.”
Smit also reacted to Ronald Koeman’s recent comparison between him and Pedri, made during a press conference. “Suddenly I received a lot of messages from friends,” he explained. “Of course I looked at them and I couldn’t believe what I was seeing. I was even a bit shocked because I didn’t expect a Dutch national team press conference to be about me. I watched it several times, and the more I watched it, the more I liked it.”
The AZ Alkmaar midfielder also acknowledged the challenge of reaching the national team. “Breaking into the Dutch national team is still very difficult. There are some excellent midfielders there. I’ll need to make a move to a bigger club to get that opportunity,” he concluded.
