Real Madrid Television has launched a scathing attack on the officiating team from the Copa del Rey final in Seville, sharply criticizing referee De Burgos Bengoetxea and VAR official González Fuertes. The backlash came after Fuertes publicly defended the quality of Spanish referees, stating they are “among the best in the world.” But Real Madrid TV had a very different view.

The club’s channel pointed to the glaring absence of Spanish referees in major international competitions, stating that “it’s strange to hear someone say that Spanish referees are among the best when there isn’t a single one present at the Club World Cup.” They added that this isn’t just an opinion, but an “objective fact”—one that has repeated itself across the final stages of World Cups and European Championships. “There must be a reason,” they argued, suggesting bluntly that “Spanish refereeing is considered below zero.”

Real Madrid TV further questioned how De Burgos Bengoetxea, despite being an international referee since 2017, has never officiated a major final or any truly important match at the international level. “How is it possible?” they asked, expressing disbelief at his continued presence in high-profile domestic fixtures despite the lack of international recognition.

The channel also took aim at the referees’ recent public appearance ahead of the final, criticizing the complete absence of questions regarding the Negreira Case—an issue Real Madrid considers central to the integrity of Spanish football. “No one asked about it,” the channel pointed out, adding that “football will be healthier without them,” in reference to the current refereeing structure and its leadership under Luis Medina Cantalejo. They claimed the game would only become truly fair when “match footage is no longer produced by people emotionally linked to FC Barcelona.”

Finally, Real Madrid TV firmly defended its right to publish content scrutinizing referees, asserting that its editorial decisions are protected by law. “What Real Madrid TV does is protected by freedom of expression,” they said. “The CTA is not in charge of deciding what kind of videos a media outlet can make.”
