The controversy surrounding the Copa del Rey clash between Real Madrid and Celta continues to make headlines. Celta left the field frustrated, criticizing referee Munuera Montero and VAR official Hernández Hernández, believing key decisions were mishandled and could have altered the match’s outcome. The next day, Atlético Madrid's manager, Diego Simeone, was asked about these controversial decisions in a press conference, and he responded, “I didn’t see the game, but they told me there were episodes like there have been for a hundred years. I don’t know what surprises them.”

Simeone was specifically referring to a possible penalty on Celta before Mbappé’s goal, a handball by Rüdiger in the box, and potential red cards for Endrick and Valverde.

Real Madrid TV quickly responded to Simeone’s comments. Presenter Jesús Alcaide expressed concerns about the upcoming LaLiga showdown with Atlético, saying: “I’m a little worried because La Liga is back, and it looks like it will be a one-on-one with Atlético, as long as Barcelona doesn’t react—a team quite favored by the refereeing system.”

Alcaide then highlighted various incidents involving Atlético Madrid: “Vicente Moreno suffered a penalty call that wasn’t, Osasuna recently protested a penalty involving Rubén García, and Alavés complained about a non-penalty call when they were winning 1-0. Last year, Real Madrid was heavily penalized in direct encounters with Atlético due to the refereeing system. And let’s not forget the 2020-2021 season, when Atlético won La Liga with help from this refereeing system. We’re worried about this upcoming match against one of the highest-paid coaches in the world.”
