The Technical Committee of Referees has appointed Javier Alberola Rojas to officiate the Valencia vs. Real Madrid match on Matchday 23 of La Liga, which will be played at Mestalla. The referee from the Castile-La Mancha committee will be assisted in the VAR room by Jorge Figueroa Vázquez.
Alberola Rojas will referee Real Madrid again just over four months after the Madrid derby, the last match he officiated involving the club. That encounter was surrounded by controversy, as neither Alberola nor the VAR intervened following a dangerous challenge by Atlético’s Nico González on Dani Carvajal. The tackle, which caught the full-back near the calf, was punished only with a yellow card, despite the referee having a clear view of the incident. Del Cerro Grande, who was on VAR duty, also did not recommend an on-field review.
Overall, Real Madrid’s record with Alberola Rojas as referee stands at 11 wins, 2 draws, and 4 defeats across 17 matches.
