Real Madrid suffered a defeat against Espanyol at the RCDE Stadium in a controversial match, heavily influenced by referee Muñiz Ruiz and the VAR official, Iglesias Villanueva. One of the key moments occurred in the 62nd minute, when Carlos Romero's tackle from behind on Mbappé's left knee went unpunished with a red card, despite its severity. Just 23 minutes later, Romero scored the decisive goal in the 85th minute, securing three points for the home side.
Earlier in the first half, Muñiz Ruiz disallowed a goal by Vinicius Jr., citing a foul by Mbappé on Pol Lozano. However, replays showed Lozano had his arm around Mbappé's neck as the Real Madrid forward entered the penalty area, adding to the controversy surrounding the officiating decisions.
