On the afternoon of February 26, Portuguese outlet Correio da Manhã reported that Gianluca Prestianni had allegedly admitted to teammates that he called Vinícius Júnior a “monkey” during the first leg of the Champions League playoff.
According to the same report, the Argentine player later offered his version of events inside the dressing room, presenting arguments to explain the incident and insisting that he does not consider himself racist nor intended to make a racist remark.
Benfica reacted swiftly to the publication. At 6:00 PM local time, the Portuguese club released an official statement categorically denying the newspaper’s claims and affirming that their player did not make any racist comments at any moment.
The controversy continues to unfold as investigations remain ongoing.
