Real Madrid's campaign against what it perceives as bias in Spanish refereeing is beginning to yield tangible results. One of club president Florentino Pérez’s top priorities has been to dismantle the influence of referees connected to José María Enríquez Negreira—the former vice president of the Technical Committee of Referees (CTA), who had a longstanding financial relationship with Barcelona. During Joan Laporta’s first term as Barça president, Negreira’s salary reportedly quadrupled, coinciding with some of the club’s most successful years.

The Merengue club has played a central role in pushing for reforms within the CTA. Real Madrid sparked controversy with a strong-worded letter after Carlos Romero of Espanyol avoided a red card during a match in Cornellà. Although many La Liga clubs criticized Madrid’s stance at the time, the tone across the league has shifted. Several clubs have since voiced their dissatisfaction with refereeing standards and decisions.

Amid this growing unrest, the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) has taken decisive action. According to Pedro Martín of Cadena Cope, CTA president Luis Medina Cantalejo will be removed from his position at the end of the season. Sources suggest the handling of referee appointments for the upcoming Copa del Rey final between Real Madrid and Barcelona may have played a part in the decision.

The move reportedly comes directly from RFEF president Rafael Louzán, and Medina Cantalejo is said to have already been informed, paving the way for a leadership transition within the refereeing committee this summer.
