Enrique Riquelme has claimed that Real Madrid is facing a serious financial situation, making the issue a central theme of one of the final speeches of his presidential campaign.
Speaking outside the club's headquarters, shortly before the conclusion of Florentino Pérez's campaign event, Riquelme called for greater transparency regarding the club's finances and criticized the current administration.
"Real Madrid is in a very serious financial crisis," Riquelme stated.
The presidential candidate also questioned the decision to hold elections without, in his view, fully informing members about the club's financial position.
"I have tried to run a clean campaign; but we must demand transparency and accountability. There is no greater democratic fraud than taking the members to the polls in an extraordinary election without them knowing the true situation of their club."
Riquelme went on to present his assessment of the club's financial situation, claiming that significant liquidity reserves have been depleted in recent years.
"Real Madrid has squandered over €770 million in liquidity in a very short time, cash reserves have been reduced by 99%, and the treasury has fallen to just a few million; to the point that some analyses warn of a real risk to future economic viability if this isn't corrected soon."
He added that one of his first measures as president would be to launch a public audit within his first 100 days in office.
Riquelme also addressed the possibility of appointing Jürgen Klopp as head coach, acknowledging the challenges involved in convincing the German to return to management.
"It's something that's been discussed between the parties; right now he has no intention of coaching anyone, but Raúl will try to convince him starting Monday."
When asked how Raúl González Blanco would attempt to persuade Klopp, Riquelme replied:
"It's key to let things happen; the hierarchy must be clear."
