Real Madrid’s night in Lisbon brought an accumulation of bad news and negative feelings. Beyond the defeat that knocked them out of the top eight and the four goals conceded, the team also lost two players for the first leg of the Champions League play-in: Rodrygo and Asencio.
Rodrygo has since issued an apology to Real Madrid fans through his social media channels. “Yesterday I let myself get carried away in the heat of the moment while complaining about time-wasting. That is not how I usually behave. I had never been sent off playing for Real Madrid before, and I am fully aware of the consequences. I apologise to the fans, the club, my teammates, and the coach. We will stay united and continue fighting for this badge and this Champions League,” the Brazilian wrote.
Referee Davide Massa showed Rodrygo two yellow cards within the space of one minute after disallowing Mbappé’s 3-3 equaliser for illegally interrupting Trubin’s throw-in. Despite the incident being clear, the forward’s continued protests resulted in his dismissal.
Barring any last-minute changes, both Rodrygo and Asencio are expected to receive a one-match suspension from UEFA.
