Rodrygo, Real Madrid's number 11, has expressed some frustration about his role in the team during an interview with ESPN. "It often feels like I'm just filling in gaps. Missing someone? Put Rodrygo in. Missing a player on the right? Rodrygo. Missing a number 9? Rodrygo. It might bother me a bit, but I'm a team player." While he remains a dedicated team member, it's clear that his current role isn't fully satisfying him, suggesting he could be happier with a more defined position.
The situation is reminiscent of Ángel Di María's experience in 2013 when Real Madrid signed Gareth Bale, which led to Di María's role diminishing under Carlo Ancelotti. Despite initially receiving the coach's trust, Di María eventually left for Manchester United in 2014 for 80 million euros.
However, Rodrygo's case is not identical, as Real Madrid continues to trust him, giving him consistent minutes, albeit mostly on the right wing instead of his preferred left side.
