Luis Rubiales spoke on El Chiringuito about Real Madrid and their position regarding VAR. The former president of the Royal Spanish Football Federation countered LaLiga president Javier Tebas, who had suggested that Florentino Pérez influenced the changes made to the video assistant refereeing system in Spain.

“Florentino Pérez is absolutely right about VAR. I recently saw a video being shared that claims Real Madrid, or rather Florentino Pérez, called me and that VAR changed from that moment on. The issue we had with the first VAR system was that the camera lens was not aligned with the offside reference line. It was a technical problem that made it impossible to correctly signal very tight offsides. This was solved when the second VAR system was selected, and that was the real problem,” Rubiales explained.

Regarding Tebas’s claims, Rubiales added that he was not surprised. “Mr. Tebas always acts out of self-interest. All club presidents, directors, and executives called me. In five years, every club from the first and second division contacted me to complain or ask for meetings,” he said.

Rubiales also insisted that Real Madrid barely intervened compared to the rest. “We even created a protocol so clubs could call or write to request appointments with the CTA. During the five years I was there, I think we received one or two calls from Real Madrid. Other clubs called five, ten, even fifteen times more. To use one club to twist the truth…” he added, once again rejecting Tebas’s accusations, which he believes are part of the LaLiga president’s ongoing attempts to undermine Real Madrid.
