Real Madrid continue to monitor the transfer market in search of reinforcements at center-back ahead of the summer window.
David Alaba is expected to leave when his contract expires, while the future of Antonio Rüdiger remains uncertain and could depend on his physical condition between now and the end of the season. Several names have already fallen off the shortlist. William Saliba renewed with Arsenal, and Dayot Upamecano extended his deal with Bayern Munich.
Ibrahima Konaté has also been mentioned, with his contract situation attracting attention, but he has yet to fully convince Madrid’s sporting department.
The name now gaining the most traction is Nico Schlotterbeck. The 26-year-old defender is under contract with Borussia Dortmund until June 2027, meaning any potential operation would require negotiation rather than a cut-price deal.
Dortmund are traditionally tough negotiators, and Schlotterbeck is a highly valued asset. However, Real Madrid may hold a subtle advantage thanks to the strong institutional relationship between the two clubs. Former Dortmund CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke has long maintained a close personal relationship with Florentino Pérez and general director José Ángel Sánchez. Even during tense moments — such as disagreements over the Super League — communication channels remained open and respectful.
Under the current Dortmund leadership, headed by Lars Ricken, that relationship is expected to continue. Whether it translates into a smoother negotiation for Schlotterbeck remains to be seen, but Madrid are clearly positioning themselves early in the race.
