On September 15, 1943, Santiago Bernabéu was elected president of Real Madrid at the age of 48, succeeding Antonio Santos Peralba. His appointment marked the beginning of one of the club’s most glorious eras, a 35-year period of institutional and sporting growth.
Under his leadership from 1943 to 1978, Real Madrid enjoyed unparalleled success: six European Cups, a competition he himself helped promote, 16 LaLiga titles, one Intercontinental Cup, six Spanish Cups, two Latin Cups, and two Small World Cups.
Bernabéu also spearheaded the construction of the New Chamartín, inaugurated in 1947 and later renamed in his honor, which became the iconic Santiago Bernabéu Stadium.
His vision extended beyond football, as the basketball section also thrived during his presidency, winning six European Cups, three Intercontinental Cups, 19 league titles, 18 Spanish Cups, and one Latin Cup.
