A new era begins for Real Madrid’s basketball team: Sergio “Chacho” Rodríguez has traded his jersey for a suit. As confirmed by the club, the former point guard will become the new sporting director, replacing Alberto Herreros, another club legend who had held the position since 2005 and helped guide the team to 30 titles during his tenure.
At 39, Rodríguez retired from professional basketball last summer, closing out a brilliant career that included stints with Estudiantes, Real Madrid, CSKA Moscow, Armani Milan, and two spells in the NBA (with the Blazers, Kings, Knicks, and Sixers). His trophy cabinet includes 24 major titles, such as three EuroLeague championships and seven medals with the Spanish national team—among them, gold at the 2006 World Cup and 2015 EuroBasket, an Olympic silver in 2012, and bronze in 2016.
Now stepping into a management role, Rodríguez will need to apply the same creativity and intelligence he displayed on the court to one of Europe’s most prestigious front-office jobs. With 28 titles since 2010, many of which he helped win as a player, Real Madrid’s basketball section is accustomed to dominance—and maintaining that level of success will be his baseline expectation.
