Real Madrid's injury crisis has become a growing concern for Carlo Ancelotti, especially as his team heads to Anfield without six key players. But, beyond the injury list, another issue looms large for the defending Champions League winners—yellow card suspensions. With several players already walking a disciplinary tightrope, this adds further pressure on the team, particularly with crucial games on the horizon.

Three key players—Luka Modric, Eduardo Camavinga, and Lucas Vázquez—are just one yellow card away from a suspension, which could see them miss Real Madrid's vital December 10th clash against Atalanta. Additionally, although sidelined with a hamstring injury, Vinicius Jr. is also close to suspension, creating even more uncertainty about Madrid’s squad depth in the coming matches.

This situation becomes especially challenging for a Real Madrid side that has already suffered two defeats in the Champions League, against Lille and Milan. Currently sitting in 21st place with six points from four games, Los Blancos are fighting to secure a top-eight finish, which would guarantee direct qualification to the round of 16. Failing to do so would mean entering an extra knockout round, making their road to the final even more complicated.

The new Champions League format only intensifies the pressure. With more matches to play than in previous seasons, the eventual champions will need to compete in 15 to 17 games, compared to the previous 13. Despite the increased number of fixtures, the yellow card rule remains unchanged—three yellow cards trigger a suspension, with additional bans occurring after every two more bookings.

As Real Madrid battles injuries and navigates yellow card risks, they cannot afford any more slip-ups. With a packed schedule ahead and crucial players at risk of suspension, managing the squad’s fitness and discipline will be key for Ancelotti if Madrid is to stay in the hunt for their 16th Champions League title.
