Since the news broke that Barcelona had been paying Enriquez Negreira, the former Vice President of the Committee of Referees, a little more than two weeks ago, Caso Negreira has generated a lot of discussion in Spanish football.
Although it is believed that the relationship began much earlier, possibly as early as 2001, the initial reports indicated that it only lasted from 2016 to 2018.
Barcelona's performance during that initial phase has been examined, and Sport has shared statistics from Negreira's time as a La Liga referee between 1979 and 1992, focusing in particular on his performance when in charge of Real Madrid games.
36 of his 132 games in Spain's top division involved Real Madrid. When Negreira officiated their games, Los Blancos had a record of 21 victories, 4 draws, and 11 losses. He also sent off one of their players nine times during his tenure.
With a loss percentage of 30.5% under Negreira, Real Madrid had their worst record ever against a single referee.
