Radamel Falcao has looked back on one of the most curious moments of his career. In a candid conversation with his former teammate Mario Suárez, the Colombian striker revealed how Real Madrid president Florentino Pérez once tried to lure him with a gesture as symbolic as it was unexpected: a napkin.
The encounter took place during a gala, in the presence of Íker Casillas and several Atlético de Madrid journalists. Florentino approached Falcao, handed him a napkin, and asked him to sign it—an echo of the famous gesture that sealed Zinedine Zidane’s arrival in 2000. “He told me to put it away, to hide it. It was very awkward because I had all the Atlético people standing next to me,” Falcao recalled.
At the time, Falcao was Atlético’s star and idol, which made the proposal nearly impossible to accept. “I was very identified with Atleti, and people saw me as one of their own,” he explained.
Still, beyond the anecdote, the Colombian confirmed that Real Madrid’s interest was real. There had been conversations through his agent and even calls from the Madrid board to explore the possibility of a transfer. In the end, however, Florentino Pérez focused on completing the record-breaking signing of Gareth Bale, leaving the dream of Falcao in white on hold.
