The reasons behind the “Florentino resign” chants at the Bernabeu

Real Madrid defeated Levante 2–0, but the result was almost secondary compared to what unfolded around the match. The Santiago Bernabéu became the stage for a clear and sustained protest, with boos aimed at the players before, during, and after the game, as well as repeated chants of “Florentino resign” echoing from different sections of the stadium.

According to Diario AS, the discontent directed toward the directors’ box is rooted in two main issues. The first concerns the management of the squad. Supporters are increasingly unhappy with how recent transfer windows have been handled and with the club’s decisions regarding its coaches, particularly the case of Xabi Alonso. After Carlo Ancelotti’s turbulent exit — with his agreement to take over Brazil made public before his departure was officially announced — Alonso was dismissed after just seven months in charge. That decision sparked widespread frustration among fans, many of whom viewed the Basque coach as the ideal long-term solution.

The second major grievance lies in the transfer market. Fans have been calling for the signing of a midfielder, a request that has gone unanswered. The failure to seize the opportunity to sign Martín Zubimendi, a player specifically requested by Xabi Alonso, is seen as the initial spark that ignited the growing unrest now surrounding the Bernabéu.

At the heart of everything is Real Madrid’s eternal demand: titles. The fanbase feels deprived of success in recent seasons. Winning the Champions League and announcing Kylian Mbappé’s signing the very next day raised expectations to extraordinary levels, fueling dreams of a dominant era. The current reality, however, has fallen well short of those hopes.

Over the past two seasons, Real Madrid have lifted only the Intercontinental Cup and the UEFA Super Cup. For a club that measures its existence by silverware, that return is far from enough. Defeat in the Spanish Super Cup and elimination from the Copa del Rey intensified the frustration, which was openly and forcefully expressed during the match against Levante.
