Despite the departures of Nacho and the serious injury to David Alaba, Real Madrid chose not to sign any center-backs this past summer. They pursued Leny Yoro, but he opted to join Manchester United, leaving the Madridistas to rely on their existing squad. The club’s plan involved Eder Militao, Antonio Rüdiger, and Aurélien Tchouaméni as a backup center-back, with Dani Carvajal available for emergency situations and Jesús Vallejo as a last resort.
However, the start of the season has raised concerns. Militao has suffered multiple injuries, Rüdiger is playing nearly every match, and Carvajal has now been sidelined for the season. This has reignited the debate about whether a new defender is needed, with Sergio Ramos' name being floated as a potential short-term solution since he is currently without a club.
Despite the speculation, Real Madrid does not intend to bring Ramos back. According to Marca, the club's transfer strategy is to invest in young talent, with the belief that even seemingly expensive transfers will prove valuable over time. At 38, Ramos no longer fits into this philosophy.
Additionally, the club maintains an unwritten rule that once a player leaves, they rarely return. This policy has applied to other club legends, including Alfredo Di Stéfano and Cristiano Ronaldo, and now seems to apply to Ramos as well. Despite the team's needs and Ramos' iconic status, the doors to Real Madrid remain closed for him.
