UEFA has announced two major updates to its flagship competition. Starting with the 2026 UEFA Champions League final in Budapest, the kickoff time will be brought forward from 9:00 PM to 6:00 PM.

According to UEFA, this change is designed to enhance the match-day experience for fans, teams, and host cities by improving logistics, boosting accessibility, and creating a more family-friendly environment. “Our goal is to make match day a truly enjoyable experience for everyone, while ensuring families and children can attend the biggest club football match of the season,” UEFA stated.

The earlier start will allow traveling fans easier access to public transportation and a safer, more comfortable journey back from the stadium. Host cities will also benefit economically, with supporters having more time to continue their celebrations after the game.

UEFA emphasized that the new time slot also provides a more favorable broadcast window, helping the final reach a wider global audience—particularly younger viewers.

UEFA President Aleksander Ceferin explained: “While a 9pm kick-off is suitable for midweek games, an earlier start on a Saturday for the final ensures an earlier finish, even with extra time or penalties. Fans will then have the chance to enjoy the rest of the evening with friends and family, reflecting on the match of the season.”

Football Supporters Europe Chief Executive Ronan Evain welcomed the decision, saying: “This is a major step forward for fans. An earlier start facilitates day trips, reduces travel stress, and allows supporters to enjoy the event without worrying about overnight logistics. It’s a practical change that puts fans first.”

The move continues a successful trend of scheduling innovations—since 2010, the Champions League final has been held on Saturdays, which has already helped increase engagement and viewership worldwide.

In addition, UEFA introduced a new regulation for the Champions League draw starting with the 2026/27 season. Under Article 16.03 of the regulations, no fixture may repeat with the same home team for three consecutive seasons. For example, if two clubs meet in the league stage in both the 2024/25 and 2025/26 campaigns at the same stadium, they cannot be drawn in the same venue for the 2026/27 season. However, they may still face each other at the opposite stadium.

These changes underline UEFA’s commitment to enhancing competitiveness, inclusivity, and the fan experience at Europe’s most prestigious club competition.
